Toward a Standard Measure of Index Density:

Proposal for measuring depth of indexing

Although I have a list of specialty areas listed below, I can create indexes for books in many different subject areas than those listed below. Email me to inquire!

Areas of Special Interest and Expertise

  • Education
  • History
  • Military Studies
  • Natural History
  • Psychology/Sociology
  • Religious Studies
  • Special Education
  • Sports and Recreation

If it appears that your book is not a good match for me, I will be happy to help you find the right indexer for the project. Having indexed for so long, I have extensive contacts with indexing colleagues around the country (and world) and can help you get just the right indexer for your needs.

Current Rates (as of January 2010):

Trade $3.00-$5.00 per page
Textbooks $3.50-$4.50 per page
Scholarly $4.25-$6.00 per page

These rates are guidelines, although 90% of my projects fall within these ranges. A “page” is defined as a typeset book page, not a manuscript page. Please see my article on rate-setting for some context and discussion about these. The only way to know for sure what a fair price is for indexing your book is for me to see it or discuss it with you. These are typical ranges where work of this type generally falls.

Please refer to the article, “Information for Authors”, for an idea of my working methods and my expectations for your involvement. Generally speaking, you can be involved or not as you desire.
